Non Compos Mentis – 3 Minute Excerpt

Full Version here: https://youtu.be/DdOF9QQs30E

The instrumentation for this piece includes a 22” Remo frame drum and a 16” Remo Ocean drum  played American hybrid lap style, and cajon. The meter and phrasing of the composition are an exploration of 5. Starting with repetition of 5/16 and then opening up into a polyrhythmic cycle of 5/4 and 5/2. The second section explores some vocabulary and stylistic elements from Western R&B/Rock concepts but also in a cycle of 5/2.  In the third section we shorten the length of the line to 5/16 drawing on rhythmic shapes more popular in Eastern Europe and the Middle-East. This excerpt covers the initial statement of the three sections of the form broken up by a cue and a synchronized figure that draws on elements from Indian classical music. The initial statement includes minor improvisational variations that are further explored in solos in the remainder of the piece.
